Dr Rick McDaniel, Canadian authority on International Development

Richard McDaniel was born in Indiana in 1947 and came to Canada to attend university in 1967. He remained there to complete both an MA and a PhD. in Third World Studies. He became a Canadian citizen in 1974 and taught at the University of New Brunswick and Saint Thomas University for 12 years before taking on the position of International Program Director at the YMCA of Fredericton in 1985.

Dr. McDaniel's articles on development issues have been published in YMCA journals as well as the New Internationalist. His two video series on international development are used in schools and universities across Canada and have been distributed in more than 25 countries.

In a joint project sponsored by the Y and CIDA, Dr. McDaniel conducted workshops on Third World issues in more than 200 schools.

Dr. McDaniel is the originator of the YMCA Peace Medallion, now used by YMCA’s across Canada during YMCA Peace Week, and he is the co-author, with Jim Petrie, of A Two Way Approach to Understanding: Issues in Global Education.

Among his other accomplishments at the YMCA of Fredericton: he established Cultures Boutique–a fair trade gift boutique and importing program; he expanded the International Program of the Fredericton Y to address local poverty issues in Fredericton as well; and he developed an eco-tourism program in cooperation with the YMCA of Belize.

Dr. McDaniel and his wife, Joan, make their home in Fredericton. They have three children and five grandchildren.
